In Andhra Pradesh, Horse gram is commonly known as Ulava and is used in preparing a very popular dish namely Ulava Charu (Horse gram soup). This helps in clearing the digestive tract of worm infections, reduces flatulence and acidity and keeps the digestive system in good condition.
Ulava charu (ఉలవచారు) is a soup made from horse gram, and bommidala pulusu (బొమ్మిడాల పులుసు) is a seafood stew that is considered a specialty of Andhra Pradesh.
Horse Gram Soup (Ulavacharu). Soak the horse gram seeds overnight and pressure cook till soft. Dry roast the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and peppercorn and grind to a fine powder.
