April 01, 2024. Indian round gourd or simply round gourd, scientifically termed Praecitrullus fistulosus, goes by the vernacular name “Tinda” in many local Indian languages including Hindi, Telugu, Marathi and Tamil. It is also commonly called apple gourd, round melon, Indian squash and Indian baby pumpkin.
Tinda does look a lot like apples but is a vegetable. You need to peel and cut it into small pieces and cook it before eating.
Round gourd or tinda contains vitamins and carotene that boosts the immunity and keeps you healthy. Its antioxidant property protects you from pathogens that affect our body thus making it one of the best vegetables to eat during the monsoon. It's pulp is less fibrous which is why it can be easily digested.
Downy Mildew: Downy mildew is another fungal disease that affects tinda plants, causing yellowing of leaves, stunted growth, and eventual defoliation. Bacterial Wilt: Bacterial wilt, caused by the bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum, can lead to wilting, yellowing, and eventual death of tinda plants.
The high fibre content of tinda aids digestion and encourages regular bowel motions. It will help you to avoid bloating, gas, and other digestive issues, including constipation.
