Idiyappam is a healthy steamed breakfast dish made with rice flour. Idiyappam maavu is made with rice flour, oil and hot water. The rice flour dough is placed in idiyappam maker and pressed on banana leaf or bamboo idiyappam plates and steamed.
It is made of rice flour, salt, and water. In most parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala Idiyappam is steamed after making sevai, while in the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu, the steamed rice flour ball is pressed to make Idiyappam, a reverse process more similar to Ottu Shavige in neighbouring Karnataka.
Known as String Hoppers in Srilanka and nu-puttu in Coorg, Karnataka, this is a popular breakfast dish or snack or a side to an elaborate lunch in many parts of South India and Sri Lanka. I have many fond memories associated with idiyappam.
