Sweet pongal is a traditional sweet dish made with rice, moong dal, jaggery, ghee, nuts & raisins. Also known as or chakkara pongal in Telugu, sakkarai pongal in Tamil, it is made during Hindu festivals.
Even though both the recipes are made with common ingredients like rice and dal. Ven pongal is tempered with whole spices, ginger and green chillies. sakkarai pongal has jaggery, cardamom powder, cashews and raisins. Both pongal is made with generous amount of ghee.
The festival takes its name from the iconic Pongal dish. Sweet Pongal, made with jaggery, rice, and lentils, symbolises sweetness and prosperity. Savoury Pongal, cooked with rice and lentils and tempered with black pepper and cumin, embodies the essence of the harvest season.
Ven Pongal is a traditional South Indian dish made with rice, split yellow mung dal, ghee, cumin, ginger, pepper and curry leaves. The word “Venn” means “White” in Tamil and “Pongal” means “to bubble & overflow” which signifies abundance. It also refers to this rice lentil dish.
