FAQ
The best gulab jamuns are made with khoya, but there are alternatives like bread which do come to rescue if you do not get khoya or mawa.
Traditionally, khoya or mawa is used in a Kala Jamun recipe, and even to make gulab jamuns. Khoya is basically dried evaporated milk solids. These milk solids are obtained by continuously cooking the milk on a low flame, till most of the moisture evaporates.
Too much water is not good. Too little will make the jamun crumble on frying. Keep the khoa/dough balls covered with a moist cloth away from any heat before frying.
Gulab jamun is often eaten at festivals, birthdays or major celebrations such as marriages, the Muslim celebrations of Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, and the Hindu festivals of Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi.
Gulab Jamun literally translated to rose berries, while rose means gulab and jamun are deep purple colour berries. It is a milk-solid-based sweet from the Indian subcontinent, popular in India.
